Weekend course: finance for dummies

Typically the mere thought of waking up on a saturday morning for class would appalling. And the fact that the said class wouldn’t end until 5pm would be even more mortifying. But the combination of interesting and relevant topics with a professor who has the perfect sense of humour (impeccable mix of snarkiness + ridiculous stories + general un-PCness) makes this rather…enjoyable.

Normally I have problems staying awake in any class immediately following lunch, except now I feel more awake than I did before lunch. I’m loving this 🙂

P.S. I’ve decided that I will take that Game Theory seminar offered by this professor, one way or another.

Perseverance

Just saw my legal writing professor from 1L. Her response to my job search woes: perseverance. I can’t agree more. I’m at the point where I think I should be desensitized towards rejection letters already, but I’m not. My heart still sinks a bit when I spot a thin, ivory envelope in the mail box, with the name of one of the law firm’s that I interviewed with. I don’t know why I still bother reading these things. Maybe a part of me still hope (however, irrationally), that the an invitation to a call-back could be buried in the standard “congratulations” on my “accomplishments.”

Regardless…here’s to hoping that I will receive more truly congratulatory phone calls…soon. Until then, I just have to keep at it.

Summer break…what break?

I thought applying for jobs was bad, but somehow I find preparing for interviews is even worse. Between booking flights, hotels, and figuring out the most cost-efficient and reliable way to go between the interview location, hotel, and airports, I’m this close to pulling my hair out. The sad thing is…several hundreds of dollars and many days of planning and countless emails later, I might still end up with no offer. All I have to say to anyone considering law school is two words: Hidden costs.

On the upside, my internships this summer have definitely made me feel better about becoming a lawyer (or at least getting a J.D.). Law school on the other hand still bothers me. Especially the fact that I can’t take as many seminars as I’d like….

Books to Movies

I just found out that the book I’m currently reading, I Don’t Know How She Does It, is turning into a movie. In fact, they’ve already made it and it’s just waiting to be released. This is the second time that I’ve read a book that turned into a movie (without knowing it when I first picked it up) in the last 6 months! The first one was One Day, speaking of which, I need to go track that book down. It has mysteriously disappeared on me between moving and finals.

Current obsessions, etc.

I am officially obsessed with macarons – it’s absolutely terrible for my waistline (w/e is left of it, anyways), and my wallet (or credit card statements…we’re not even going to go there). But I swear they are the most perfect little wonders ever created. They come in an assortment of delightful pastel colors, maddeningly delicious flavors, and absolutely divine textures to die for. They make me wish I lived in a big city, or better yet, Paris – just so I can drown myself lose at Laduree and Pierre Herme.

After watching Midnight in Paris, I promptly requested three books by F. Scott Fitzgerald (The Last Tycoon, Tender is The Night, The Beautiful and Damned), the Parisian Wife, and A Moveable Feast. All I need to do now is somehow find the time to finish 8 books in the next week. Fat chance, I know. But it’s worth a try, no?

Plans for the next week:

  • Screening of Page One – tonight! (plus bubble tea…YUM!)
  • dad moving to st. louis on thurs
  • Trip to Osage Beach on Saturday
  • Water park (maybe) + fireworks – 4th of July
  • PACK for Chicago
  • Hopping on a bus on Tues!
  • Officially starting my second internship of the summer (and my third job)
